OPPF statement in support of the National Association of Black Journalists

Reliable news and accurate information play vital roles in our democracy. We rely on those with journalistic skills to inform and expand our base of knowledge.

A diverse staff of skilled and talented journalists are best suited for this responsibility. Thus, it was alarming to learn that CNN has no black journalists in numerous key news leadership positions.

While we applaud black journalists in on-air anchor and reporting roles, we know that those behind the camera in significant leadership positions are the ones who determine and shape news coverage.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. supports the National Association of Black Journalists’ (NABJ) call for greater diversity in CNN’s news leadership ranks.

NABJ’s research indicates that:

  • CNN President Jeff Zucker has no black direct reports;
  • CNN has no black executive producers;
  • CNN has no black news vice presidents;
  • CNN has no black news senior vice presidents;

We ask CNN to facilitate a meeting with NABJ leaders and representatives.

We encourage NABJ to be authentic representatives of the black community, living up to established journalistic standards, excellence and values.

We look forward to hearing about the results of a thorough CNN analysis of the network’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in conjunction with NABJ.
