The "Brother You're On My Mind" Initiative in the July 2016 Issue of Essence Magazine!
(June 26, 2016)
Atlanta GA – The issue of mental health is very important to the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. The "Brother You're On My Mind" initiative was formed to help start very important conversations about mental health. The two-fold platform focuses on educating members, their families and communities on the effects of depression and stress. It also drives the importance of seeking help for mental health problems that can otherwise be detrimental if left untreated. This initiative is highlighted in the July 2016 issue of Essence Magazine in their special Men's Issue. The title of the article is "Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown" that spotlights the epidemic of untreated mental health disorders in African American men on pages 115-117. "Untreated mental health disorders and unmanaged stress are silent killers of Black men."
Interviewed for this article were Brother Antonio F. Knox, Sr., 40th Grand Basileus and Brother Dr. David Marion, 1st Vice Grand Basileus, a practicing Psychologist who stated, "It goes against what we have in our minds of how we are meant to be; Strong Black men should be able to handle any and everything in their lives." The crisis of mental health for Brother Darryl D. Moore is also discussed in this article to personalize the need for attention to medical treatment. Brother Knox stated, "I want to thank Essence Magazine for providing special and careful attention to this critical issue that affects so many African American men. We had issues within the Fraternity. We had to do this Program so that men wouldn't just ignore symptoms and signs of mental illness."
Since its humble beginnings on the Howard University campus, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity continues to be on the front line, leveraging its power, influence and more than 100 years of commitment to the uplift of our people and our communities.
