The Life of the Honorable Herbert Tucker Jr.:
Friday, August 24, 2018 by Author: Admin.

Herbert Tucker, Jr. was a man who knew the meaning of perseverance. His incredible journey went from hauling bags as a Red Cap at South Station in the 1930's to becoming the presiding court judge of Dukes county district court in Edgartown, MA (1979). On July 23, 2018, the African American Heritage Trail unveiled a plaque on the building in his honor.

In 1959 the Red Sox were the only team without an African American on their major league roster. After a promising spring training, Elijah Greene was sent to the minors. Troubled by the move and the fact the team denied both Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson a roster spot; he launched a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD).

Tucker aggressively pursued the matter, prompting the team to call up Elijah Greene from the minors. On July 23rd, 1959 Greene entered a game as a pinch runner, becoming the first African American to play for the Boston Red Sox. Today's recognition of the late Honorable Judge Herbert E. Tucker highlights the significance of his work to remove racial barriers as the NAACP Boston Branch President, a prominent jurist, and 23rd Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

We would like to thank the Boston Red Sox and the Tucker family for quickly making this event happen, and we look forward to future collaborations to continue the legacy of Judge Herbert Tucker.
